Return to the Roots – Discover Dalmatian Heritage in Grohote
The island remembers the immigration and emigration of large numbers of people: the arrival of the people of Salona after the fall of Salona in the 7th century, the flight from pirates who burned and killed in the 13th century, the refuge in El Shatt in the 20th century. It also remembers individual departures to South and North America, Australia, and Europe — the fortunate and unfortunate destinies of groups and individuals caught in the whirlwind of history.
It remembers and bears witness to the intertwining of languages and cultures.
Do you remember them as well?
This small historical walk through the island’s migrations will help both me and you to learn, remember, and pass on to those who come after us the hardships, but also the joys, of those who experienced and survived them.
