The development of Split through the 19th and 20th centuries

This walking tour starts at the Square of the Republic Prokurative with the story of the most beloved mayor Antonio Bajamonti, a man of great passion for his hometown, who managed to turn Split from a neglected city on the margins of the Austro-Hungarian Empire into a charming Mediterranean town.

Walking along the waterfront promenade Riva, you’ll hear stories of Split between the 2 world wars, the origin of decorative palm trees along the waterfront, but also a story about the mayor who recently swam in the port to prove that the water is clean.

The tour continues towards the eastern neighbourhoods located on the slopes, where you’ll learn about the development and lifestyle of the city in the 1960s and 1970s, when Split was an important industrial centre of the Yugoslav federation transformed into a big centre of sports events – so our tour ends in Gripe – a sports facilities complex joined with the first shopping mall ever opened in one communist country.

The tour starts in the historical centre and ends at a 15-minute walking distance from the Old Town, in the area where you can find sports facilities, shops, cafes and restaurants. The duration of the tour is 60 minutes.

The tour includes some walking down slopes (no stairs), and during summer days it is recommended to bring sunscreen, sunglasses, a hat/cap and a bottle of water. The tour is suitable for people with disability or reduced mobility.

The price of the tour is €20/person. A minimum number of tour participants is 4, while a maximum number is 10 (upon request – a tour with a smaller group of people may be arranged).
