Story About the Cake

At first glance, Hrapoćuša may seem like a simple cake made with only a few ingredients, yet its rich and distinctive flavor has long attracted dessert lovers from around the world. Its true secret, however, lies not in the recipe itself but in the unique method of preparation—an artisanal skill carefully preserved for generations by the women of the village of Dol and passed down from mothers to daughters and granddaughters.

No one knows exactly when the tradition began or who first drew inspiration from the local stone known as hrapoćuša and decided to shape a cake in its likeness. This grainy, reddish, rugged stone gives the village its warm, sun-touched character. The traditional craft of preparing Hrapoćuša is protected as an intangible cultural heritage of Croatia, and the cake has been featured in documentaries and numerous articles that introduced it to audiences around the world.

Hrapoćuša tells the story of its island, its women, and a tradition shaped by love and patience. In this workshop, held in the family kitchen of a lady from the village Dol—who found her home in another part of Brač, in Selca—you will discover the sweet secrets behind its preparation.
