Gripe

Split’s Gripe neighborhood, located just a short walk from the Old Town, offers a different perspective of the city through all the senses.

This tour focuses on two ‘towers’ (don’t worry—this isn’t a Lord of the Rings themed tour): the baroque Gripe Fortress, built in the 17th century during the Ottoman invasions, and the Gripe Sports and Shopping Center, built in a time of peace, love, and prosperity in 1979 when Split hosted the Mediterranean Games.

Though diametrically opposite in function, both ‘towers’ reflect the rich Mediterranean heritage of Split.

Gripe Fortress Split | Venetian Military Fortress History

The tour begins in front of the entrance to the Gripe Fortress (west side); as tour takes place entirely outdoors, so please dress according to the weather and wear footwear suitable for partially uneven terrain.

During the tour of the Gripe Fortress, we will reflect on its construction history and the various armies that occupied it and flew their banners over its walls. In contrast to its past, we will also explore the fortress’s contemporary uses.

Following the fortress visit, we will take a leisurely walk through the wooded area of the neighborhood known as Vidilica, heading toward the Gripe-Koteks Sports and Shopping Center.

Originally built for the 1979 Mediterranean Games held in Split, the Gripe Sports Center continues to serve as an “incubator” for Olympic medalists, earning Split the title of the ‘sportiest city in the country.’

Koteks shopping center was completed shortly after the Games and still evokes nostalgia for the products and services this ‘city of consumption’ once offered to the people of Split, serving as a reminder of the final phase of comunist Yugoslavia where consumerism played a significant role.

Join us for a walk through the history of Gripe, filled with fascinating details of modern life and stunning views of the city.
