A LITTLE STORY ABOUT THE SEAquality label

The sea connects shores and people.

I would be glad if it connected you and me in a small historical story about the sea.

Join me aboard a small boat (kajić) and let us sail along the coast from Rogač to the Piškera cove in Nečujam — a bay where Emperor Diocletian ordered the construction of a fishpond in the 4th century AD.

The connection between Dalmatia and the sea

We will sail through a bay that the ancient Romans called Vallis Surda — the “Silent Bay.” You will learn why it received such a name and why this bay attracted not only Diocletian, but also Marko Marulić and Petar Hektorović, and why it continues to attract sailors and tourists every day.

You will see the remains of the underwater walls of the ancient fishpond and have the opportunity to swim and snorkel (if you wish) in the clear waters of Piškera.

You will also learn many interesting details about the history of this area — a small, quiet, and still remarkably well-preserved corner of the Mediterranean.
