A LITTLE STORY ABOUT STONE AND MANquality label

On the island of Šolta, wherever you go, you will encounter stone. In the villages it appears in houses, churches, old schools, and brotherhood buildings; in nature it forms reefs, karst formations, stone piles, field shelters, and lime kilns.

Our stone — limestone — has sometimes been an obstacle, yet in other ways it has been a source of life and even prosperity.

The bond between stone and people in Dalmatia

On this small “walk” along the edge of the Šolta field and through the olive groves, I will show you how our ancestors cleared excess stone from the land in order to create more fertile soil, and how they built stone piles (gomile) and small field houses. You will also have the chance to try it yourself — moving stones and building a stone pile.

You will see parts of Šolta that lie outside the usual routes and enjoy views you have probably never seen before.

Part of the tour is done by car and part on foot through the landscape. The walk is neither long nor demanding: we walk about 300 meters and drive about 1.5 kilometers.

Join me on this small “walk” through a part of the Šolta landscape.
