Following the cross on Island Hvarquality label

During the night between Maundy Thursday and Good Friday, when the moon shines in its full glory on bell towers, churches, vineyards and olive groves, around 10 p.m. processions start from the villages of Vrboska, Jelsa, Pitve, Vrisnik, Svirče and Vrbanj, each following their own cross. In a clockwise direction, they go from one to another village, stopping in churches, where in front of the “Tomb of Jesus” they sing the old verses of “Gospin plač” what could be translated as Laments of the virgin Mary. All these processions together form a unique, uninterrupted half-millennium penitential tradition that we call the “PROCESSION FOLLOWING THE CROSS” and are part of the passion tradition in the Mediterranean, included in UNESCO’s Representative List of the Intangible Heritage of Humanity.

Join us on this unforgettable journey through time and tradition and experience an atmosphere that will move you deeply and make you understand why people of Hvar have the will to walk 25km during the night, each year for over 500 years. We look forward to your arrival!

On this interpretive tour, visitors will be able to feel the deep connection between the inhabitants of the central part of the island of Hvar and the heritage of procession Following the cross. The tour is led by an authentic, local interpreter who has been participating in the procession since young age and carried the cross in 2022.

We will walk through the same locations and streets that the procession passes when, on Good Friday morning, after a whole night of walking, it arrives in front of the parish church in Jelsa. Then we will visit the square, where we will see the place from where the cross-bearer sprints the last hundred meters to embrace the priest. After that, we will head towards the church of St. John, where we will learn more about the unique Glagolitic chant “Gospin plač” or Laments of the virgin Mary, which is sung during the procession. In addition, we will have the opportunity to hear that tune in its original form from the chosen singer, which evokes deep emotions in the listeners and transports them into the atmosphere of the passion heritage we are talking about.
