The Legend of the Lakes
The Legend of Miloševo and Stipančevo Lakes
The most famous lore says that at the foot of Krinj, a small hill in Hrvace, there once stood wealthy courts or even an entire city, often called Širingrad or Gavan’s Courts. Its inhabitants became arrogant and godless, so according to legend, the earth collapsed, and two lakes formed in its place.
Another version tells of a terrible dragon or mythical beast that used to emerge from Miloševo Lake. It demanded a daily sacrifice, first livestock, and later young girls. When it was the king’s daughter’s turn, Saint George appeared. Riding his horse, he pierced the dragon with his spear and freed the region from its terror. This is why Krinj, with the remains of the Church of St. George standing above the lake, is considered the exact place where this legend unfolded.
