Green Lake: Where the Past Emerges from the Water
The Secret of the Green Lake
Just a forty-five-minute drive from the bustling city of Split, where the gray Dalmatian karst begins to blend with the hills of Imotski, nature guards a secret of an unreal turquoise color. Any traveler who makes their way down toward the settlement of Ričice will encounter a breathtaking sight – a vast expanse of water that everyone admiringly calls the Green Lake (Zeleno jezero).
Its official, somewhat cold name, the Ričice Accumulation Lake, cannot even begin to describe the magic of this place. As the small rivers Vrbica and Ričina tirelessly fill it with crystal-clear water from surrounding springs, the lake’s surface shimmers like a jewel. Yet, this turquoise beauty is actually a grand guardian of time and memories.
Beneath that calm water surface lies an entire forgotten world.
Before the dam was built and before the water flooded the valley, life pulsed here. The land was harsh but fertile, soaked in the sweat and hard work of the local people. Villages stood here, vibrant and loud: Parlovi, Dujmovići, Gujići, and Topalušići. In those courtyards, children were born, elders sat in front of their houses, and the scent of ripe figs and freshly baked bread filled the air. Rich, carefully tended vineyards stretched between the homes, sustaining the families, while old stone paths and bridges connected neighbors and friends.
And then came the water. The houses, vineyards, and paths disappeared into the turquoise depths, giving way to the modern lake. The people had to leave, but their roots remained trapped at the bottom.
Yet, the Green Lake does not allow these memories to fade entirely. Every year, when the summer heat strikes and the water level drops sharply, the lake begins to whisper its stories. From the turquoise depths, the remains of an old bridge slowly emerge like ghosts from the past. The sun once again shines upon the submerged foundations of houses where people used to laugh and cry, and the dried, stone sections of former vineyards peek through the mud.
In those moments, the Green Lake becomes a living monument. It reminds anyone standing on its shores that the beauty we look at today rests on the sacrifice and history of the people who once dreamed their dreams right here.
